NPLQ lifeguard qualification
The Royal Life Saving Society’s ‘National Pool Lifeguard Qualification Generation 10 (NPLQ G10)’ is the latest version of this internationally recognised award. It is ideally suited for anyone looking to work as a lifeguard or starting out on a career in the leisure industry.
Prerequisites
To complete this course you must be 16 years of age or over, and have a reasonable swimming standard. The Royal Life Saving Society describes this as being able to:
- Swim 100m on your front and on your back
- Swim 50m in 60 seconds or less
- Tread water for 30 seconds
- Climb out of the pool without using the steps
- Dive to the bottom of the deepest part of the pool

Course Details
This course includes NPLQ Gen10, AED, and anaphylaxis training. It takes six days to complete and will be hosted here at Chester City Baths.
You will be in the pool every day for two hours. You will need to bring swimwear, a t-shirt, and shorts suitable to wear in the water. You will also need paper and pens to make some notes with. All literature will be provided.
The course requires active participation including floor work for the first aid and resuscitation training – this will involve kneeling, bending, and stretching. Candidates are advised to wear whatever they feel comfortable in, given this range of movement and physical interaction.

- Independent external assessment on the final day
The candidate must be 16 years of age on the day of assessment and 100% attendance is required to complete the course.
